November/December 2020 Tiny Teaching Thoughts!

Dear Scholars and Friends,

In November and December 2020, I developed a few more materials aimed at promoting student success by eliminating the hidden curriculum and promoting feedback. I'll share links to those here.

I created:
1. an infographic guide on how to use drafting in writing, since that has helped me with perfectionism-related procrastination.
2. an infographic about using outlining and reverse outlining in writing to help clarify the goals and outcomes of your writing.
3. an infographic about how I read primary literature quickly, since we expect students to know how to do this with no training.
4. an infographic about grappling in the classroom, which describes how struggling and grappling have nuanced yet crucially important differences.

I also appeared on two episodes of the super important and informative podcast, Dear Grad Student. These two episodes focused on disability in graduate school. Links: Episode 1, Episode 2, my brilliant colleague Kayden Stockwell, and the hugely talented podcast host Elana Gloger.

I attended the 45th annual POD Network Conference, where I made new friends, heard a number of excellent talks, and spent most of my time thinking about grading for equity and ungrading.

I also discussed my popular Twine story (September 7th, 2020) about in-person classes during COVID-19 from various perspectives, on a panel at Vanderbilt, and the recording is available here.

Looking forward, I have a few really exciting announcements that I am so eager to share with you in the new year.

Please enjoy any holidays you celebrate and take some time and space for rest.

Be safe,
Cait

October 2020 Tiny Teaching Thoughts!

Dear Scholars and Friends,

In October 2020, I developed a few new materials aimed at promoting student success by eliminating the hidden curriculum and promoting feedback. I'll share links to those here.

I created:
1. an infographic guide on how to write an email for students who feel overwhelmed or are not sure what information to include in an email.
2. a pair of guides about giving and getting feedback.
3. an infographic about disability accommodations to familiarize students and faculty about the lengthy and laborious process of requesting accommodations.
4. an infographic about self care where I highlight how self care is not always face masks and meditation, but for many folks will include phone calls with insurance agents, orders for medications, and other mundane tasks required to promote health and wellbeing.

I also wrote a blog about how mentors and advisors should inform students when they are nominated for awards, even when they don't win them, based on a Twitter poll I conducted.

I have a number of other projects underway right now, and I look forward to sharing them with you soon!

Be safe,
Cait
